The picture shows the U.S.S. Yale, a steel protected cruiser of the 1890s, as crewmen and dockhands load supplies aboard. Such work, known as taking on stores, was a routine but labor-heavy part of keeping a warship at sea for months, when food, coal, ammunition, and equipment all had to be moved from shore by hand. The image comes from the Detroit Publishing Company, whose photographers traveled widely in the years around 1900 to document American harbors, ships, and industry for sale as printed views. Its date is an estimate drawn from the company's 1901 catalog, so it likely dates from the late 1890s.
