The caption identifies this view as the battleship Yamato after an attack by U.S. bombers on October 25, 1944. Yamato was the largest battleship ever built, with guns of 18.1-inch caliber, and was the flagship of Japan's Combined Fleet. The attack came during the Battle of Leyte Gulf, when American carrier aircraft struck the Japanese fleet as it moved toward the Philippines. The record is an old caption-card entry that has not been independently verified, so the exact damage shown here is best read as the photographer's or captioner's account of that day.
