Unlike the battleships of its day, the U.S.S. *Miantonomoh* was a double-turret monitor, with its two heavy gun turrets set low in the hull, a design that favored a low profile over speed or open decks. The ship was named for Miantonomo, a 17th-century Narragansett sachem, and it served in the late 19th-century American steel navy as the country began building a modern fleet. These three glass negatives, made around 1892 by the Detroit Publishing Company, are close variants of one another, and one is inscribed with a copyright date of 1892. Comparing the small differences between them shows how the photographers framed the same vessel from slightly different positions.
