The title pairs the U.S.S. Patoka with the Shenandoah, a Navy rigid airship commissioned in 1923 and the first rigid airship built in the United States. The caption calls it a blimp, but a rigid airship has an internal framework and differs from a nonrigid blimp, so the label is worth checking. Bain News Service, a commercial photo agency, made the glass negative, and the record gives no date, so the pairing of a fleet vessel with an airship points to the early 1920s, when the Navy was developing lighter-than-air craft.
