Taken on August 7, 1924, this view shows the U.S.S. Patoka, a Navy ship that served as an airship tender, supporting the lighter-than-air craft the Navy was developing in the 1920s. The picture comes from the National Photo Company, a Washington-based press photography firm active in the early twentieth century that documented government and military life. Its glass negative shows streaks and blemishes from the natural deterioration of the original coatings, which are worth keeping in mind when judging fine detail.
