Taken at Quantico, Virginia, on March 13, 1925, this view shows the U.S.S. Henderson, a Navy transport used in the years after the First World War to move troops, Marines, and supplies. Quantico, on the Potomac, was the Marine Corps' main base, so a ship there links the picture to the service's training and logistics. The National Photo Company, a Washington firm that documented government and public life in that era, made the glass negative. Its streaks and blemishes come from the natural breakdown of the original coatings over nearly a century.
