This glass negative pairs two vessels named in its title, the U.S.S. Shenandoah and the U.S.S. Patoka, though the title is unverified and the Shenandoah was a Navy rigid airship rather than a battleship. The Shenandoah, commissioned in 1923, was the first rigid airship built in the United States, and it was used for scouting and experiments until it broke apart in a storm over Ohio in 1925. The National Photo Company made many views of the period, and the streaks and blemishes on the glass come from deterioration of its original coating rather than from the scene itself.
