A diver named Crilby is pictured with the air central valve of his diving gear aboard the U.S.S. Walke, a detail that points to the hands-on mechanics of naval diving before the First World War. The National Photo Company, a Washington studio that documented government and military subjects, made the image sometime between 1908 and 1919, a period when the Navy was refining diving and salvage work. The ship and diver's names come from studio data that has not been verified, so they are worth checking against other sources. The glass negative also shows streaks and blemishes from the natural breakdown of its original coating.
