Few pictures show the working side of a battleship as plainly as this view of the crew galley aboard the U.S.S. North Dakota. The galley was where ship's cooks prepared meals for the enlisted crew, and a ship of this size fed a large company several times a day, so the space was busy and tightly run. The glass negative was made by the National Photo Company, a Washington, D.C., firm known for its street and government views, and the record dates it between 1909 and 1920, a span that covers the ship's early years in the fleet. Streaks and blemishes on the glass come from deterioration of the original coating, so the image may look softer than the scene did.
