The title points to two members of a gun crew aboard the U.S.S. Oregon, a battleship commissioned in 1896 and best known for its voyage around South America to join the Spanish-American War in 1898. The record does not give a date, so the picture's exact moment is unknown. Detroit Publishing Company photographers worked mainly from the 1890s into the 1920s, making their images useful for showing everyday life and equipment in the early Navy. Notice the physical labor of the work, with one sailor driving the heavy shell home and another aiming the gun.
