Among the largest private houses of its era, Whitemarsh Hall was the country estate that financier Edward T. Stotesbury built outside Philadelphia, and this interior view is noted for its organ. Stotesbury, a partner in the Drexel banking firm, commissioned the French-inspired mansion from architect Horace Trumbauer, and it was completed in the early 1920s as a showcase for his wealth and lavish entertaining. Frances Benjamin Johnston, a photographer known for documenting American architecture and interiors, made the picture, which is dated here to about 1922. It captures the period's taste for European-style grandeur among Philadelphia's wealthiest families.
