Whitemarsh Hall, the country estate of banker Edward T. Stotesbury, stood outside Philadelphia in Montgomery County rather than within the city limits. Architect Horace Trumbauer designed the house in the grand French style associated with Louis XIV's court, and it was among the largest private homes in the country. Frances Benjamin Johnston, a pioneering photographer of American architecture and interiors, recorded this view, which her catalog marks as an interior. The date of about 1923 is an estimate, so treat the picture as a glimpse of the house in its early years.
