Whitemarsh Hall, the country estate of financier Edward T. Stotesbury, stood in Whitemarsh Township, just outside Philadelphia, though the caption places it in the city. Stotesbury, a partner in the Drexel & Co. banking house, commissioned architect Horace Trumbauer to build the house in the early 1920s in the style of a French château. The estate was one of the largest private residences of its era in the region. Frances Benjamin Johnston, a documentary photographer known for her studies of American architecture and interiors, made this view, and the record's "Interiors" tracing suggests her focus was on the rooms inside.
