Whitemarsh Hall, the country estate of banker Edward T. Stotesbury, stands in the countryside outside Philadelphia, and this view is one of the interior records in the Frances Benjamin Johnston Collection. Trumbauer designed the house in a French classical style, drawing on the palaces of Louis XIV, and it was among the largest private residences built in the United States during the 1920s. The date given here, 1923, is marked with a question mark, and the caption details come from old catalog cards, so the exact year and room should be confirmed before relying on them.
