Whitemarsh Hall, the country estate of banker Edward T. Stotesbury, stood in Whitemarsh Township just outside Philadelphia. Horace Trumbauer designed the French-style mansion in the early 1920s for Stotesbury and his wife, Eva, and its scale and lavish interiors made it one of the best-known private homes of the Gilded Age's later years. Frances Benjamin Johnston, a leading architectural photographer of the period, recorded such interiors with a careful eye for their decoration. The date of about 1923 is an estimate from the old caption card, so it is worth confirming against other sources.
