This photograph shows Whitemarsh Hall, the country estate of banker Edward T. Stotesbury, which sits in Whitemarsh Township just outside Philadelphia rather than within the city limits. Architect Horace Trumbauer designed the mansion in a French classical style, and it was among the largest private houses built in the Philadelphia area in the early 1920s. The photographer, Frances Benjamin Johnston, was known for documenting architecture and interiors, so the picture likely reflects the grand, formal character she was recording. The date on the card is marked with a question mark, so 1923 is an estimate.
