Whitemarsh Hall, the country estate that banker Edward T. Stotesbury built in the Whitemarsh area north of Philadelphia, is the subject here, and the caption card tags this view as an interior. The house was designed by the Philadelphia architect Horace Trumbauer and was among the largest private residences of its era in the United States. Frances Benjamin Johnston, a documentary photographer known for recording American buildings and interiors, made the picture, and the date on the card, 1923, is marked with a question mark, so it is best treated as approximate.
