Whitemarsh Hall, the estate of banker Edward T. Stotesbury just outside Philadelphia, is the subject here, and the caption card points to an interior view. Architect Horace Trumbauer designed the house in a grand French style, and it was built in the late 1910s to host large social gatherings. Frances Benjamin Johnston, the photographer credited in the collection, was known for architectural and interior photography of wealthy American homes. The date in the title carries a question mark, so the early 1920s is best treated as an estimate.
