Whitemarsh Hall, the country estate of banker Edward T. Stotesbury, rose on the rolling land outside Philadelphia in the years after the First World War. Stotesbury, a partner in the Drexel & Co. banking firm, commissioned architect Horace Trumbauer to design the Georgian-style mansion, which was among the largest private houses of its day. Frances Benjamin Johnston, a pioneering photographer known for her architectural and interior views, recorded the house, and her pictures preserve how its rooms were furnished. The title and the date of about 1923 come from old, unverified caption notes, so the exact year deserves some caution.
