Whitemarsh Hall, the country estate that banker Edward T. Stotesbury built outside Philadelphia, appears here in an interior view. Horace Trumbauer designed the house in a French Renaissance style, and it was completed in the early 1920s as the Stotesburys became prominent figures in the city's society. Frances Benjamin Johnston, a photographer known for documenting architecture and decorative interiors, made pictures like this one to show how wealthy families furnished their rooms.
