The Public Garden in Boston, one of the oldest public gardens in the United States, is the setting here, with its lake and footbridge carrying the view across the water. Keystone View Company of Meadville, Pennsylvania, issued this scene on a stereo card around 1929, when stereographs were a popular way to bring distant places into American parlors. Viewed through a stereoscope, the two slightly offset images gave the lake and bridge a sense of depth. The Public Garden was laid out in the 1860s on reclaimed land, and its swan boats on the pond became a well-loved feature for generations of visitors.
