Open-air schools were a early twentieth-century response to the tuberculosis epidemic, and this print shows one in South Boston, where children spent their school day outdoors regardless of the weather. The record's subjects point to a scene of children eating and drinking, a detail that matters because nourishment and fresh air were central to the open-air approach, which aimed to build up frail or undernourished pupils. The children's clothing, heavy wraps and caps among it, reflects how these classes were held in cold New England weather. The photograph is one of a group gathered in the Goldsberry Collection, made between 1900 and 1920.
