Old South Meeting House and New South Church are the two buildings named for this engraving, which places them alongside Federal Street Church and Park Street Church. Old South, completed in 1729, was where large crowds gathered in December 1773 before the Boston Tea Party. This plate was printed as an illustration for Bowen's *Picture of Boston*, a guidebook that served visitors and residents who wanted to know the city's notable buildings. Around 1830, these churches stood as landmarks of a city proud of its religious and civic history.
