St. Paul's Church is the subject here, the Episcopal church on Tremont Street in Boston's Downtown Crossing area, designed by Richard Upjohn and completed in 1820, though it was later enlarged. The print comes from the Farm Security Administration and Office of War Information collection, a body of photographs made by federal photographers in the late 1930s to document American life and the country's built environment. Its date is estimated between 1935 and 1940, a period when the Federal Works Agency was active in surveying public buildings and cities. Notice how the photographer framed the church's architecture against the surrounding street, a record of an older Boston landmark during the Depression years.
