This photograph shows Winter Street in downtown Boston, a view that names two businesses on its storefronts, Jameson & Knowles and Geo. E. Allen. Around 1895, Winter Street was one of the city's busy shopping corridors, running between Tremont and Washington streets, where merchants competed for customers arriving on foot, by horse-drawn carriage, and by streetcar. Views like this one, with signs legible at street level, give a useful record of how commercial Boston looked at the end of the nineteenth century, before the automobile reshaped the downtown streetscape.
