Tremont Street is one of Boston's oldest thoroughfares, running along the edge of the Boston Common, and this stereograph catches it on a day when umbrellas were up along the sidewalk. The card was issued by B.W. Kilburn of Littleton, New Hampshire, a studio that produced large numbers of stereo views of American towns and streets in the 1880s and 1890s. Viewed through a stereoscope, such cards gave a three-dimensional picture of everyday city life, and the crowd and rain-shaded walkers here offer a glimpse of how the street looked at the end of the nineteenth century.
