Tremont Street runs along the edge of Boston Common, and this view shows the tree-lined mall that ran beside it, a walkway that had served Bostonians as a promenade for generations. The Detroit Publishing Company, which produced photographic and color views of American towns and landscapes for sale to travelers and publishers in the late 1800s and early 1900s, made the image. The record gives the date as c1930 but flags it as unverified, so the exact year is uncertain. Look at the street edge and the row of trees, which show how the Common's pedestrian paths and the busy city street met at the time.
