The caption card ties this photoprint to churches and graveyards, so the picture likely shows a Boston burying ground beside a place of worship, a combination common in the city's older neighborhoods. Samuel Chamberlain, the photographer and etcher credited on the card, made many views of Boston and New England in the 1930s, and his photoprints were reproduced by halftone for wide circulation. Boston's colonial burying grounds, with their weathered slate and carved stones, drew particular attention from artists and photographers of the period, who saw them as reminders of the town's seventeenth- and eighteenth-century past. The record gives no further detail about the exact site, so the print is best read as a document of that interest in old Boston.
