The picture shows Boston's old City Hall on School Street, the building the city occupied from 1865 until it was replaced at Government Center in the late 1960s. Its ornate stone façade and mansard-roofed profile reflected the civic confidence of the post-Civil War decades, when Boston was expanding its government and public services. The Detroit Publishing Company, which made many photographs of American cities for commercial sale and travel publications around 1900, took the view. Its record dates the print to the 1900s, though that date comes from an unverified caption card.
