The house on North Square in Boston's North End is the building most associated with Paul Revere, the silversmith and midnight rider of April 1775. Revere, who was born in Boston in 1734, lived in this house for much of his life, and it still stands today as one of the oldest surviving wood-frame houses in the city. Because the caption card gives no date, this etching is best understood as a view of an older structure that was already well known as a historic site by the time artists began recording it. Its quiet street setting shows how much of colonial Boston's architecture survived into the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries.
