The Paul Revere House on North Square is the oldest surviving building in downtown Boston, and this 1941 exterior view shows its weathered wooden frame and steep roofline as they stood before the site became a formal museum. Built around 1680, the house was home to the silversmith and patriot Paul Revere for much of the 1770s, when he set out from the North End on the night of April 18, 1775. Photographs like this one from the early 1940s capture the neighborhood as it looked during the years when Boston's colonial-era landmarks were being recognized and preserved.
