Few images from pre-Revolutionary Boston were more widely circulated than this engraving of the shooting on King Street on March 5, 1770, when British soldiers fired into a crowd. The Custom House, at the head of the street, forms the backdrop and places the event in the commercial center of the city. Revere published it that spring as a piece of political argument, presenting the killings as deliberate and the victims as innocent, and it helped turn public anger against the troops stationed in town. Its tidy rows of soldiers and its portrayal of the crowd owe as much to propaganda as to eyewitness accuracy.
