Old South Church, with its tall steeple, rises above the street in this view of Washington Street, one of Boston's busiest commercial thoroughfares. Its 1729 meetinghouse was the site of the crowded town meeting in December 1773 that preceded the Boston Tea Party. By the 1890s the congregation had moved away, but the old building remained a landmark on a street of shops and traffic. Stereographs like this one were made to be viewed through a stereoscope, giving viewers a three-dimensional look at everyday city life.
