Five men seated in a room with a clock on the mantel are the trustees of the Boston Public Library: Henry W. Haynes, Frederick O. Prince, Samuel A.B. Abbot, William R. Richards, and Phineas Pierce. The photograph is dated 1893 or 1894, when the library was still housed on Boylston Street and the trustees were overseeing plans for the Copley Square building that opened in 1895. Made by Halberstadt, a Boston studio, the portrait offers a formal record of the men who governed the institution in those years.
