Seated at three-quarter length and turned toward the right, John F. Fitzgerald appears here during his first term as mayor of Boston, which began in 1906. Fitzgerald, known affectionately as "Honey Fitz," rose from the city's Irish-American neighborhoods to become one of its best-known politicians. The portrait bears the name of Theo. C. Marceau, a New York photographer, a reminder that studio portraits of public officials circulated well beyond the cities where their subjects worked. Images like this one helped shape how voters pictured the political leaders of the early twentieth century.
