Published in London on October 25, 1775, this mezzotint names John Hancock as "of Boston in New-England" and "president of the American congress." He had taken the chair of the Continental Congress that May, and the print appeared while the colonies were already fighting Britain. It reproduces a painting by Littleford, and mezzotint builds soft gradations of tone by working a roughened copper plate, which gives the face a richness that line engraving could not match. The print offers a window onto how a leader of the rebellion was presented to the British public at the time.
