John Adams, the second president of the United States, is the figure at the center of this portrait, a subject who spent much of his career in Boston and its surrounding towns before the nation existed. Adams was a lawyer and political writer in the years leading to the Revolutionary War, and he helped argue the colonial case for independence in the Continental Congress. Boston, where he practiced law and took part in the protests against British policy, shaped his views on liberty and self-government. Portraits of Adams from this period and later are worth studying for how they present a man who moved from the local stage of Massachusetts to the highest office in the new republic.
