Jake Stahl, the Boston Americans first baseman, is set apart here by the team name printed on the card, which places him with the early American League club before it became the Red Sox. The chromolithograph process let printers reproduce a painted-looking portrait in bright color, and cards like this were inserted into tobacco packs and sold as collectibles in the early 1900s. Stahl later managed Boston, and his playing and managing careers help show how these cards promoted players to fans in the years when the sport was growing quickly.
