Cy Young is shown here in a full-length pose, mid-delivery with a baseball in hand, the kind of motion that defined his long career on the mound. Taken around 1908, the picture dates to his years with the Boston Americans, the American League club that later became the Red Sox. Young pitched for Boston from 1901 through 1908 and was among the most durable starters of his era, and his name still stands for the award given each year to the league's best pitcher. The photograph comes from the George Grantham Bain Collection, a large body of news photographs that the Library of Congress holds, which makes it a useful record of how early ballplayers were presented to the public.
