Boston's professional baseball history reaches back to the 1870s, when the Red Stockings helped establish the pattern for organized play. The city's rivalries grew after the American League's Boston club arrived in 1901, and the 1903 World Series between Boston and Pittsburgh was the first modern Fall Classic. Fenway Park, which opened in 1912, still anchors that tradition. Views like this one show a game that many Bostonians treated as a civic pastime.
