Boston's baseball story is one of the oldest in the country, and this picture belongs to it. The city's National League club, first called the Red Stockings and later the Beaneaters and Braves, played for decades at the South End Grounds. In 1901 a rival American League club arrived as the Boston Americans, later the Red Sox, and in 1903 it met the Pittsburgh Pirates in the first modern World Series. Images like this one capture how central the game became to neighborhood life in a city that took its teams very seriously.
