Boston's baseball history runs deep, and this picture belongs to a city that claimed some of the sport's earliest professional teams. The Boston Red Stockings played in the National Association in 1871 and later became the Braves, while the American League club founded in 1901 eventually took the name Red Sox. Both teams drew loyal crowds to ballparks such as the Huntington Avenue Grounds and, after 1912, Fenway Park. Because the record gives only the title and gallery, the details of this particular scene are not documented here, but the rivalry and civic pride that shaped Boston baseball are worth keeping in mind as you look.
