The subject here is a statue of John Adams, the second president and a Massachusetts native, set in Boston rather than in his home town of Braintree, now Quincy. The caption card gives no date and its details are unverified, so the photograph's exact year is uncertain. Like many of Boston's bronze civic monuments, the statue honors a figure from the Revolutionary era whose public reputation was shaped by later generations. The print comes from the Wittemann Collection, a group of photographs of the city and its statuary, and it shows how the monument was presented to the public at the time it was made.
