This view captures the Boston Museum on a May day around 1903, the year the institution closed. Despite its name, the building was best known as a theater on Tremont Street, where a resident stock company staged plays for decades. The name dated from an earlier museum of curiosities that occupied the site before the theater took over. The street-level shops show how the ground floor of a downtown Boston playhouse was rented out to merchants, a common arrangement in busy commercial districts of the period.
