This pair of ink, wash, and graphite drawings shows the Meeting House on Hollis Street in Boston, with a ground plan on one side and an east elevation on the other. The title comes from an inscription on page eight of a sketchbook associated with the Bulfinch name, but the drawing has not been firmly attributed to Charles Bulfinch, so the link should be read as a probable one. Its date falls somewhere between 1803 and 1827, a period when Boston's Congregational meeting houses were both places of worship and important civic landmarks. Comparing the plan with the elevation shows how an early republican architect worked out a building's floor arrangement and its outward appearance together.
