Looking up State Street, this stereograph frames the Old State House at the far end of a busy commercial thoroughfare, placing the city's oldest surviving public building amid everyday traffic. Built in 1713, the building served as the seat of colonial and then state government, and the Declaration of Independence was read to the public from its balcony in July 1776. Around 1901, State Street was lined with offices and businesses of Boston's financial district, and the card's paired images, meant to be viewed through a stereoscope, give the street a sense of depth and bustle.
