The Old State House stands out on its street as one of the few surviving public buildings from colonial Boston, with its brick walls and clock tower rising above the lower buildings around it. Completed in 1713, it served as the seat of the royal and colonial governments and was the center of political life in the city before the Revolution. Its balcony is where the Declaration of Independence was read aloud to Bostonians in July 1776. Today it is part of Boston National Historical Park and houses a museum on the city's history.
