From Washington Street, this view shows the Old State House hemmed in by the commercial bustle of downtown Boston around 1906. Completed in 1713, the brick building housed the colonial and state government, and the Declaration of Independence was read to the public from its balcony in July 1776. The caption card also tags the picture with newsboys and child labor, a reminder that street trades such as newspaper selling drew young workers into the city's crowds. The record is old and not fully verified, so the date and any details about the people in the scene should be read with some caution.
