Frozen spray from the fountain on Boston Common has built up into glassy shelves, while the gilded dome of the State House rises behind the bare trees. Winter scenes like this were a favorite subject for photographers of the 1890s, who prized the way fresh snow simplified busy streets into soft shapes and strong contrasts. The State House, completed in 1798 and designed by Charles Bulfinch, was then the heart of Massachusetts government, and its dome, first covered in wood shingles and later in copper that was gilded in 1874, made it one of the city's most recognizable landmarks. Pictures of the Common in 1897 also record a park that drew daily crowds of walkers, skaters and streetcar riders.
