Under the Elms on Boston Common is one of the older green spaces in the city, and the view here shows the broad avenue of trees that once gave the spot its name. Boston Common dates to 1634, making it the oldest public park in the United States, and by the early twentieth century it was a place where residents strolled, rested and gathered for civic events. The 1906 date places the scene in the Progressive Era, when many American cities were investing in parks and tree-lined walks as places for public health and recreation. The elms, which had shaded the Common for generations, are the feature most worth noticing in the composition.
